Operation Eagle Claw was a U.S. military mission conducted on April 24-25, 1980, aimed at rescuing 53 American hostages held at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran during the Iran hostage crisis. The operation emerged from President Carter’s growing frustration with the inability to secure the hostages' release through diplomatic channels. Executed by the fledgling Delta Force, the mission faced significant challenges, including mechanical failures, adverse weather at Desert One, and poor planning. Ultimately, the mission was aborted, leading to the deaths of eight servicemen. Key lessons learned included the need for improved intelligence, contingency planning, and enhanced coordination in special operations.
